Power Yoga

Athletic movement meets mindful practice — forge strength, stamina, and discipline on the mat.

What Is Power Yoga?

Power yoga draws its roots from the Ashtanga tradition but takes a freer, more creative approach to sequencing. Rather than following a fixed series of postures, our instructors build each class around a specific theme — perhaps hip openers, upper-body strength, or balance — and craft a flowing sequence that challenges both body and mind. The pace is brisk, the transitions are purposeful, and the emphasis is always on linking movement to breath in a way that generates real, functional strength.

Unlike conventional gym workouts, power yoga uses your own body weight as the primary source of resistance. Planks, chaturangas, standing balances, and deep lunges build lean muscle through sustained isometric holds and controlled eccentric movements. This approach strengthens stabiliser muscles that are often neglected in machine-based training, improving joint integrity and reducing your risk of injury both on and off the mat. The result is a body that is not only stronger but also more balanced, agile, and responsive.

Why Choose Power Yoga?

If you are someone who thrives on physical challenge and enjoys feeling your muscles work, power yoga offers the intensity of a rigorous workout wrapped in the mindfulness of a yoga practice. Each class elevates your heart rate, builds muscular endurance, and develops core stability — all while cultivating the focused, meditative awareness that distinguishes yoga from pure exercise. Many of our power yoga regulars are runners, cyclists, swimmers, or strength athletes who have discovered that the practice fills gaps in their training that nothing else quite addresses.

The mental component is equally significant. Holding a challenging posture when every fibre of your body wants to release teaches a quality of patience and self-discipline that transfers directly into daily life. Over time, practitioners develop a deeper understanding of their physical limits and a quiet confidence in their ability to push through discomfort. This resilience becomes a resource they carry into work, relationships, and personal goals far removed from the studio.

What to Expect in Class

A typical power yoga session at Nippocrat opens with a brief centring meditation and several rounds of sun salutations to build heat internally. The main body of the class unfolds as a progressive series of standing sequences, arm balances, and inversions, each building on the last in both complexity and intensity. Your instructor will offer variations for every posture — scaling the challenge up or down so that each person in the room is working at their appropriate edge.

The closing sequence brings the tempo down gradually with deeper stretches and a guided cool-down, culminating in a restorative savasana. You will leave feeling energised yet calm, with a satisfying sense of having tested your boundaries in a safe, supported environment. We recommend bringing water and a small towel, as the practice generates considerable internal heat even at room temperature.

Who Is Power Yoga For?

We recommend power yoga for practitioners with at least some prior yoga experience, as the pace and physical demands assume a baseline familiarity with foundational postures and transitions. That said, a fit beginner with a willingness to learn is absolutely welcome — our instructors are skilled at guiding newcomers through unfamiliar territory. If you are recovering from an injury or managing a chronic condition, please speak with your instructor before class so they can offer appropriate modifications.
